Remembering War the American Way

As the title would suggest, this reading had to do with the post-war years of Korea. This overseas conflict was an effort by the United States to stop the spread of communism. After the Korean “War,” a term which some used and some were hesitant to use, Harry Truman had all the bodies of the deceased veterans returned stateside. I think that was a commendable decision, as those who lost loved ones would be able to mourn at the burial site, and the veterans who died fighting for their country would be left to rest eternally in it, not in a foreign country. Things like these contribute to how people remember the conflict and the president involved.  Another factor in the memory of the war is the erection of a memorial. The construction of a memorial was not only expensive and time consuming, but could prove controversial. In 1986, a Korean War Veterans Memorial was authorized to be constructed near the Lincoln memorial.
